Terms of Service
Last updated: 2026-10-19
Welcome to The Ethics Lab, operated by The Ethics Lab. By creating an account or using the service, you agree to these Terms. If you are using The Ethics Lab on behalf of a school, you agree on behalf of that school.
Who may use The Ethics Lab
The Ethics Lab is an educational service for high-school students (grades 9–12), teachers, and schools. It can be used two ways: independently (you sign up yourself) or through a school/district that provisions your account.
- Users must be 13 or older. Independent self-signup is blocked for anyone under 13.
- Students are provisioned by their school for district-managed use — students do not create schools, and student accounts are added by a school or via a teacher's class code.
- Teachers, staff, and administrators must have authority to act for their school when they create classes, roster students, or accept these Terms for the school.
Your account
Keep your login credentials confidential and let us know of any unauthorized use. You are responsible for activity under your account. Provide accurate information when you register.
Acceptable use
Do not:
- Use the service to harass, harm, or impersonate others.
- Attempt to access data you are not authorized to see, or probe or disrupt the service's security.
- Misuse the AI tutor — including trying to make it produce unsafe content or bypass its safety features. The tutor flags concerning content to teachers, and repeated violations may lock tutor access.
- Upload content you do not have the right to share, or that is unlawful.
The AI tutor (coming soon)
The AI tutor, Inky, is a coming-soon feature and is currently disabled for students. When available, it is an automated tool, not a human, and it can make mistakes. It is a learning aid, not a source of professional, medical, legal, or crisis advice. If you or someone you know is in crisis, contact local emergency services or a crisis line (in the US, call or text 988). Teachers and schools are responsible for supervising student use.
Content and ownership
Students and teachers keep ownership of the work they create. You grant us the limited right to store and process that content to provide the service (and, once the AI tutor is enabled, to send tutor messages to our AI provider to generate a reply). The Ethics Lab's own content, lessons, and software remain ours.
The Discord community
Our Discord server is optional, for users 13 and older, and governed by these Terms, the server's posted rules, and Discord's own terms. Joining it does not create an The Ethics Lab account; the lessons need a separate signup.
Service hours. We award hours for debates we host, using the rules posted in the server: time in the voice room, answered attendance checks, and real contributions in the chat. A verification sheet from us confirms participation in our program; whether your school accepts it is up to your school. We may withhold or remove hours that were earned by gaming the system, such as using more than one account, automated reactions, or filler messages, and we may remove members who break the rules.
Privacy
Your use of The Ethics Lab is also governed by our Privacy Policy, which explains how we handle student and account data, including under FERPA and applicable state student-privacy laws.
Service changes and availability
We may update, add, or remove features, and we may suspend accounts that violate these Terms or that pose a safety or security risk. We aim for reliable service but do not guarantee it will be uninterrupted or error-free.
Disclaimers and limitation of liability
The service is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind to the fullest extent permitted by law. To the fullest extent permitted by law, The Ethics Lab is not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the service.
Termination
You may stop using The Ethics Lab at any time and request deletion of your data as described in the Privacy Policy. We may terminate or suspend access for violations of these Terms.
Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms; we will change the date above and bump our policy version. Material changes will be communicated to account holders and schools.
