About The Ethics Lab

The Ethics Lab is a student-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit. We write AI ethics curriculum, give it away, and teach it — online, in classrooms, and through student-run AI Days.

Our Mission

The Ethics Lab is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. EIN 42-2016932. Contributions are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law.

At The Ethics Lab, our mission is to bridge the gap between Generation Z and the rapidly evolving world of Artificial Intelligence. Some students grow up surrounded by AI tutors, mentors, and families connected to the tech industry, while most are left without access to the knowledge shaping the future economy. The Ethics Lab exists to close that gap by giving every student, not just the privileged few, the opportunity to understand, engage with, and thrive alongside AI through the same depth of concepts, fluency, and real-world understanding. We also teach it because AI is already hurting young people, through deepfakes of classmates, chatbots that give confident wrong answers, and apps that quietly collect their data. A student who knows how these tools work is much harder to fool, and much better at protecting the people around them.

That gap has very little to do with how capable a student is. A student whose parent writes software gets to treat AI as a tool they can ask questions about at dinner. A student two districts over gets to treat it as a cheating scandal, a rumour, or a headline about the job they were planning on. Both of them graduate into the same economy, and only one of them was handed the vocabulary for it.

So the work is narrow on purpose. We build the course we wished existed, we keep it free, and we put it in front of as many students as we can reach — no paywall, no waiting list, no selection process to get through first. What a student does with it afterwards is genuinely up to them. Our part is making sure the door is open.

How We Started

The Ethics Lab is young, and the story is short enough to tell honestly. It runs in three parts.

  1. Chapter 01

It started as a debate argument

The Ethics Lab began in Florida Atlantic University's S.E. Wimberly Library, where two high-school debate teammates — Anik Sahai, an AI researcher and engineer, and Michael Gomez, a history student with a passion for law and philosophy — were preparing a case on the ethics of artificial intelligence in healthcare. The research turned into an argument about what AI even is, and who gets to decide how it is used.

  2. Chapter 02

The gap we kept running into

Some students grow up surrounded by AI tutors, mentors, and families working in tech. Most do not. That gap decides who is ready for the economy AI is building, and it has nothing to do with how capable a student is. We built the curriculum we wished existed and made it free.

  3. Chapter 03

From a podcast idea to a registered nonprofit

The idea took shape in December 2025 — originally as a podcast about the questions nobody was asking students about AI. It grew into a curriculum, then a platform, then an organisation: The Ethics Lab was incorporated in Florida on April 23, 2026 and is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit. It is built with professors and students from university research labs, including Florida Atlantic University and its MPCR machine-perception lab, and it holds a Candid Seal of Transparency.

Our Programs

Three things we run today. Each one is live, each one is open now, and each one leads somewhere a student or a teacher can actually click.

  • The AI ethics curriculum

A free, self-paced curriculum covering how AI systems work and where they touch society — bias, misinformation, privacy, academic integrity, creative work, and the environment. Students move through interactive lessons, discussion prompts, and real-world case studies, and finish with an assessment that earns an Ethics Lab certification — which opens up internship opportunities with our partners and discounts at local businesses near their school.

    Start the curriculum

  • Classroom and school partnerships

Teachers run The Ethics Lab with their own classes through the learning platform: live sessions, assignments, a gradebook, and progress reporting. Schools are verified and sign a data privacy agreement — the SDPC National DPA plus their state's exhibit — before any student is rostered.

    Bring us to your school

  • AI Day and student chapters

Students start a chapter to run an AI Day at their own school: one day of lessons, a guest speaker, and a debate for students who would otherwise never be taught any of it. The chapter picks the date and runs the room, we hand over the curriculum, slides, worksheets, speaker help, and a founder on call. Every lesson was written by a high schooler, and the chapters running these days are the ones telling us what to teach next. Chapter leads get leadership experience and can join the wider Ethics Lab team working on curriculum, outreach, media, and research.

Three Ways In

Take the course yourself, put it in front of a classroom, or fund the next set of lessons. All three help, and the first one is free.
